Shooting Drills

Articles On Shooting

While drills are good, sometimes hearing advice and tips from experts is the best thing you can do in terms of improving your shot. The articles below are from experienced and well known coaches. They have been around the block and can help you improve your shot.

How To Properly Shoot Off The Pass

Shooting Drill #1

Grab a ball and stand three feet away from the front of the hoop. Put the ball in your shooting hand and simply take one handed shots. Take ten shots from each of the five “Around the world” positions. Back up a few feet and repeat the exercise.

This drill helps reinforce your shot form by forcing you to keep your elbow in. One thing to keep in mind: when completing this drill start out with your knees bent and extend them as you go to shoot. Also, ALWAYS FOLLOW THROUGH. (When we say follow through, we mean flick your wrist as you complete your shot.) Following through helps to keep your shot consistent, and will give arc and touch to increase your shot percentage.

Floor Shot Drill

This is a very simple drill, that with practice, helps develop shot flow and soft touch on the shooting hand. All you need to complete this drill is a relatively open area and a basketball.

Lay on your back with the ball in your hands. Then simply shoot the ball up, and catch it on its back spin. While doing this, focus on gripping and shooting the ball with your finger tips. On its way back down, catch it with your fingertips rather than your palms. This helps develop soft touch. Also, keep your elbow in and follow standard shooting technique, but find a position that is comfortable for you. Do this drill often. Although it is not the same as shooting on a court, it helps develop shot comfort without requiring a court.
